[경제금융용어] 7. 골디락스 경제 (Goldilocks economy)

 골디락스경제(Goldilocks economy)는 경기과열에 따른 인플레이션과 경기침체에 따른 실업을 염려할 필요가 없는 최적 상태에 있는 건실한 경제를 가리킨다. 이는 영국의 전래동화인 골디락스와 곰 세 마리(Goldilocks and the three bears)에 등장하는 금발머리 소녀의 이름에서 유래하였다. 동화에 따르면 엄마 곰이 끓인 뜨거운 수프를 큰 접시와 중간 접시 그리고 작은 접시에 담은 후 가족이 이를 식히기 위해 산책을 나갔는데 이 때 집에 들어온 골디락스가 아기 곰 접시에 담긴 너무 뜨겁지도 않고 너무 차지도 않은 적당한 온도의 수프를 먹고 기뻐하는 상태를 경제에 비유한 것이라 한다. 즉 경기과열이나 불황으로 인한 높은 수준의 인플레이션이나 실업률을 경험하지 않는 양호한 상태가 지속되는 경제를 지칭한다.

 

A Goldilocks economy refers to an ideal economic condition where there is steady growth without the risk of overheating (which could lead to high inflation) or the threat of a recession (which could cause rising unemployment). The term is derived from the English fairy tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears, in which the blonde-haired girl, Goldilocks, finds a bowl of porridge that is neither too hot nor too cold, but just right.

In the story, after the mother bear prepares three bowls of porridge—large, medium, and small—she and the family go out for a walk to allow the porridge to cool. When Goldilocks enters the house, she finds the bowl of porridge from the smallest bear, which is at the perfect temperature, and enjoys it. This scenario of finding a balanced, comfortable state is analogous to the ideal economy where inflation and unemployment are both under control, creating a balanced and sustainable economic environment.

In a Goldilocks economy, the country is able to enjoy the benefits of healthy growth without facing the negative impacts of excessive inflation or high unemployment, making it an optimal economic state.
